Not to cheapen our reverence of the military dead, but I thought a Soapy Rememberance was in order. So, let’s go back in time and I’d like you to pick your fave Soap Character who has passed in real life.
I am choosing: Ruby Anderson played by Norma Connolly (beginning 1979). I loved her because she was fiesty, straight-shooting and motherly. She was funny and didn’t take any bull. She worked at GH before running Kelly’s Diner. Rumored to have made the best chili in Western NY!

When “Ruby” died on GH, they had a short memorial at the diner and it wasn’t the grand event I thought it should be!
Every soap used to have the “sage” character…the one you went to and dished about your problems. With Ruby, it was over a cup of coffee at the diner. Did you know she dated Dan Rooney? I also remember when Lucky first came back to Port Charles. Played by Jonathan Jackson, it was one of the best reunions I’ve ever seen. They had immediate chemistry, that’s for sure.

Myrtle, AMC. I love the way she took care of Zach and I loved the way they took out time to remember her. I was also sad, in a good way, that Zach still talks to her and asks her for guidance. I feel that is a proper way to respect those that are still in our hearts. I know it’s a soap, but it can help to remind and comfort people that even the soap families remember the loved one.
I hope everyone is with their loved ones this day of remembrance, but thank you and my admiration and prayers are with those that have died for me. Peace to those left behind.
Watched the memorial day concert in washington cried like a baby remembering my Uncle died in korea and he was 21.
I think I mostly miss Steve Hardy and Jesse Brewer and Lila
Although, I too loved Ruby, but if I had to pick one person, it would be Lila. Remember when the Quartermaines were banished from the mansion and they had to live at Kelly’s? Her Picklalila recipe saved them from wrack and ruin. Those were good days.
Who is the young boy in the photo. I recognize young Robin but can’t place the young guy Lucky? Jason? AJ?
The first person that comes to mind is Nancy Addison – Jillian Colerdige on Ryan’s Hope.
I think the boy in the photo is Mike Webber. Was he the adopted son of Rick and Ginny?
Campus is correct – that is Mikey Webber and he was indeed the adopted son of Rick and Ginny.
I totally miss Ruby and Lila, they were 2 great women both on and off the screen. However these days I have to say that I am missing the Alcazar brothers on the screen these days. We could use a lil oomph to our afternoon!
On OLTL I totally miss Mel Hayes, Dorian’s true love. When they brought back his ghost last year it melted my heart. They were so good together.
Mike Webber. I don’t remember him. What relation is he to Liz (and Sarah)? Also, if he was adopted son of Rick, he is/was connected to Laura as well?
I also loved Myrtle! and Kate on AMC too. They still refer to her–Phoebe another wonderful woman you loved to hate!
Charita Bauer & Michael Zaslow – GL
One beloved character, one dastardly villain … two talents who added so much to the canvas.
Anna Lee – GH
Has there ever been a more elegant long-term character on daytime?
Ruth Warrick, Frances Heflin & Eileen Herlie – AMC
A truly talented trio, and sorely missed.
Phil Carey – OLTL
Words not needed, one of a kind.
Mike Webber was a street kid that Rick and Ginny adopted. It was right after “Blackie Parish” left? Or was it the same time. They also had that girl on–kind of a ‘young laura’. It was an attempt to rebuild the Webbers. Liz wasn’t even a twinkle in anyone’s eye yet when this all happened and Laura was gone from the show.
Thanks Karen. So, since Robin is in the photo are we to assume that Robin is that much older then Liz?
Blackie was kind of an older brother to Mike, I think the blonde girl “kind of a young Laura” was Lou (Danielle Von Zerneck) who was Blackies girlfriend.
As for Liz and Robin, they are about the same age, Liz was a teen when she came on the show…maybe a couple of years younger than Robin, but close. Robin was still a teen when Nicholas came to Port Charles, and when she dated Jason.
This was all pre-bubble lamp.
Lila. I miss her.
OLTL Phil Carey and Clint Richie-GH Anna Lee-AMC Ruth Warwick
Ruby is a great memory….I also agree with some others…Steve Hardy/Lila…..those people & there characters are missed alot on GH….the history….its gone for good.
AMC….I agree Mrytle was great (when I watched it in the 80′s back than) same for OLTL…both ‘Clints’ are missed (or Asa/Clint)…..good memories all around…..Thanks for sharing your memories Karen. Those good old GH days will not ever be forgotten by me thats for sure……
Jessie Brewer and Lucille March
Since Charita Bauer & Michael Zaslow were mentioned, I would like to mention the original and to me only Alan Spaulding: Christopher Bernau. His Alan was dastardly. GL needed a dastardly villian b/c Roger Thorpe was believed dead (he survived falling into a “black hole”). Alan is still a character on GL but just isn’t the same.
MacDonald Carey (Tom Horton, Days). (God love her, Frances Reid (Alice Horton) is still with us at 94, and judging from imdb.com appeared on Days as recently as the May 8th episode.)
I always like how Day of Our Lives never puts on a repeat like GH and OLTL and even AMC did. They all played repats today but not Days.I too loved McDonald Carey and love Alice too.
Oh all the wonderful memories everyone is sharing today. It makes me laugh and cry with happiness.
Since today is a day we should remember our military men and women who are out there keeping us safe I whole heartedly say thank you. I have a brother in law in the Air Force Reserves so to all of our Wubbers out there who also have a loved one in the military I say thank you for your sacrifice as well. I’ve seen first hand what path you have to walk. And to our fabulous Karen and all the other Wubbers out there I am thrilled to have you all a part of my day and to be a part of this great community.
Who has more fun than us… NOBODY!!! xoxoxox
What a great “old” pic. Ruby, Holly, Edward, Tiffany, Sean, Mike, Robin, Bobbie and Lila. Yes, Mike Webber was on the same time as Blackie. He was adopted by Rick and Lesley and then later found out he was the biological son of Ginny and Derek Barrington. After Lesley’s “death” Rick became involved with and married Ginny. Lou was Blackie’s girlfriend and niece of Rose Kelly.

Actually, Robin is a contemporary of Jason and Brenda’s. She is two years younger than them. Robin was already at Yale when Liz was still a freshman in high school. So they are about four years apart.
